NEW BERN, NC’S 300TH CELEBRATION

Market a 300-year-old city to the world and do it with style

The Challenge

New Bern, NC, is a beautiful, 300-year-old city, with a rich history and a story that needed to be shared with the world. Unfortunately, the city had an insufficient budget, an all-volunteer committee, no real branding and no means of getting the word out. But none of that mattered. New Bern’s 300th Anniversary Celebration organizers had a dream of attracting visitors from around the world to participate in historic events scheduled throughout 2010. High Tide Creative’s task was three-fold: promote one of the oldest cities in the country, do it in an unexpected way, and get results.

The Solution

The 300th Committee wanted to depart from the typical, historical marketing approach, which utilized colonial figures and nostalgic representations of the city. In response, High Tide Creative proposed the use of colorful, graphic illustrations to create iconic representations of the historic town and use them for all aspects of marketing. We focused on their bear symbol, the downtown waterfront, Tryon Palace and the city’s memorable clock tower. The icons were used on street banners throughout the city, graced the pages of numerous publications and were featured on all merchandise sold during the year-long event.

The Results

During 2010, New Bern, NC graduated to the ranks of a true destination city. Thousands of people from all over the world flocked to our town’s doorsteps and participated in historic events that will be remembered for years to come. Even the mayor of Berne, Switzerland, joined in on the festivities! The city experienced a positive economic impact, with numbers that exceeded all expectations. And to top it all off, the creative graphics produced for the city won numerous awards and were featured in international publications.
